Project Information
Ramon Airport is located about 19 km north of Eilat, and constitutes Israel’s southern aerial gateway. It caters to domestic and international tourists to Eilat and Israel’s southern tourism sites – the Arava, Mitzpe Ramon, and the Dead Sea.
The length of the takeoff and landing runway – 3,600 sqm – is suitable for most types of aircraft, to all destinations. The airport consists of a taxiway, aprons, an advanced energy center, a state-of-the-art baggage screening system, advanced security systems, fire fighting station, and modern operation and support areas.
In addition, the airport has aprons for medium-sized wide-body jet aircraft, for turboprop aircraft, and for general-aviation aircraft. The airport’s ATC tower is 50-meters high and meets advanced international standards.
The passengers’ terminal is spread out over 30,000 sqm, and includes commerce, restaurants, and duty-free shops. Some 1.8 million passengers pass through it every year. At the front and sides of the terminal are parking lots for private vehicles, taxis, rental cars, public transport and drop offs.
Airport Construction
The airport’s paving work was conducted as follows: the first elements to be constructed were the takeoff runway, the taxiways, and the aprons, followed by main roads, meaning access routes to the site’s top/front portion, and the main parking lot between them. Then work centered on the perimeter road along the security fence. Lastly, support structures were constructed on the lower level, with roads and parking lots, including a main road that crosses the site.
Ashtrom Contracting faced many challenges and difficulties throughout the project’s planning and construction stages. For example, the site was handed over with dirt work and wet infrastructure only
partially completed; there were inconsistencies between the segments prepared by the dirt work contractor and the paving-work plans; and work was conducted in conjunction with other contractors and interfaces.
Nonetheless, Ashtrom Contracting succeeded in meeting the project’s timetables, and as of 2019 Ramon Airport is fully operational for domestic and international flights.
